Usually a good part of it, yes. That grey band is the most common call we get in Studio City, and it's rarely a stain. It's fine dust and decomposed granite tracked in from hillside driveways and walkways, ground into the pile by foot traffic. Because the grit is abrasive, it dulls the fibre as well as dirtying it, so how much colour returns depends on how long it's been walked on. We pre-treat the lane, agitate so the cleaning solution gets down past the tips, and hot water extract. Older wool or wool-blend carpet in the 1920s-40s hillside houses often responds well. Nylon wall-to-wall in the postwar ranch tracts usually cleans up close to the surrounding carpet. Faster here than in most places we work. Valley summer humidity is low and the heat pulls moisture out quickly, so with windows open or the air moving, bedroom and hall carpet is typically walkable in a few hours and fully dry well before the next day. Two things slow it down: shaded hillside rooms on the north side of a house that never get direct sun, and heavy cut-pile in a closed-up room.
